Antigone

Projection Design by Laura Merrill

Foothill Theater Arts (Los Altos Hills, CA) November 2023

Written by Sophocles

Translated by Anne Carter

Directed by Bruce McLeod

Anne Carter’s new translation of Sophocles’ Antigone is modern, playful, bittersweet, and profoundly poetic. A civil war has ended, and the Republic has survived, civic law and order has been restored. In just 70 minutes, Kreon’s adherence to a legal structure over his niece’s loyalty to her dead brother is both relentless, and ultimately devastating.

The set was centered around a rotating stage with the projections shown over a marble awning. The projection design represents the oncoming storm of confusion and devastation arising from this society’s recent political uprisings. Moments of valor, murder, condemnation, and injustice are complemented with their specific moments in this overall storm of governmental upheaval.
